Leave it to AM800 CKLW radio personality, Dan MacDonald to stir up a a hearty food debate that brought out such passionate opinions.

Dan, the host of Bell Media’s The Dan MacDonald Show on AM800 CKLW in the Windsor-Detroit region, fired up a lively debate on his Facebook page by asking a simple question: “What’s the bigger sin for Italian cooking? Pineapple on pizza..? Or spaghetti (pasta) sauce from a can?”

Some responses were genuine, stating their general like of one topping over the other. Many in the dozens and dozens of comments claim pineapple on pizza is criminal. However, the majority say canned sauce is the biggest sin, and boy were they passionate about it.

“Sauce from a can is unacceptable. pineapple is just a bad choice,” says one commenter. Another writes, “I’m not even Italian, but I am from Windsor, so based on a maximum two degrees of separation I am willing to dip my toe far enough into the cultural appropriation pool to say that sauce from a can is an abomination.”

As I’m sure you can tell from the name, Mr. MacDonald has a Scottish heritage. As an individual with Italian immigrant parents, the answer is both, Dan. Both should be criminal and a felony.

I bet next he’s going to really cause a kerfuffle and ask, “which Chef Boyardee dish tastes most like how Nonna made it?”

Our good pal Dan recently participated in our Be A Pizza Maker class. We think he might need to take it again.

We’ll forgive you this time, but, if it happens again…no….just no.
