WindsorEats has submitted a proposal to the City of Windsor to operate outdoor dining spaces once restaurants are permitted to reopen.

The proposal is for WindsorEats to develop, coordinate and execute an Outdoor Food Hall project to allow multiple small, local restaurants the opportunity to expand into outdoor dining space within city parks under the coordination of WindsorEats. The location being considered for the first food hall would be Lanspeary Park. If successful, the idea is to expand into parks located across the city.

Our experience in event planning and execution over the last 16 years has garnered local, provincial and national accolades.

The Outdoor Food Hall Project would help showcase the continued support for the hospitality industry by the municipality while providing small, independent restaurants the opportunity to provide safe dining spaces to allow for an opportunity of increased capacity.

Of course, all this is based on the restrictions determined by the Province of Ontario and the guidelines passed down as to how such gatherings would be permitted to operate.

CTV Windsor recently did an story on the proposal and other ideas being discussed.

The use of outdoor spaces benefits small, local restaurants which had limited capacity prior to COVID-19 as well as those without outdoor dining facilities and patios. The Outdoor Food Hall Project has the capacity to help spur economic activity within the hospitality industry.

An example of a city in Canada providing outdoor space on city owned property is the City of Calgary. They have opened up sidewalks and roadways at no charge to restaurants to expand outdoor seating areas. However, not all restaurants have the ability to open up onto the sidewalks and roadways that are directly adjacent to the restaurant. Our Outdoor Food Hall proposal gives restaurants the opportunity to expand into a location, city parks, that provides a great opportunity for social distancing and meeting health and safety regulations without impeding public right of ways.
