This weekend, September 12-14, is the Olde Sandwich Towne Festival and if you’ve got a hankerin’ for some chicken and ribs then this is the festival for you. Word on the street (or at least in the office I work in) was that Ron Jones and the Jones/Grayer crew make some mean tastin’ ribs.
“The BBQ rib and chicken is a hall mark of the festival,” explains Ron. “We sell out every year. It is something my wife, myself and everyone in our family partakes in.”
The Jones/Grayer BBQ takes place Saturday, September 13 at 1 p.m in Mill Street Park. Tickets are $15 for the ribs or $12 for chicken and are being sold onsite Saturday.
So what makes these chicken and ribs so special?
“Certainly everyman thinks his sauce is the greatest, but I know mine is,” Ron proudly proclaims. “That’s the difference. Anybody can cook ribs, anybody can cook chicken but it’s the sauce that puts us over the top.”
The Olde Sandwich Towne Festival has been around for years and this year marks their 18th anniversary. The area is rich in history dating back to the 1700s and is one of the most diverse communities in Essex County.
If you miss out on the chicken and ribs there’s still plenty to do. This festival is jammed with activities including ghost tours, music acts, bake sales, the list goes on.
Highlights of the festival include the fireworks on Friday, an enormous kids program, the parade on Saturday, a reenactment of the underground railroad, gospel music and lots more. The complete list of events can be found on the Olde Sandwich Towne Festival website.
Attendance at last year’s festival topped 10,000 and this year, with an extended program of activities, organizers are expecting 20,000.
